Gone are the days when self-care used to be referred to as physical care only. The term has evolved incredibly over the years and now includes emotional, mental and spiritual attributes, along with physical well-being. People who are more driven to perform self-care practices have been found to be more content and happier.
Self-care refers to the continuous efforts of an individual towards achieving a healthy relationship with oneself. It is an active choice to reduce anxiety and attain mindfulness. Psychotherapist, Ashley Thorn defines self-care as performing healthy activities in any aspects of your life, that fill your cup and make you feel focused, calm, happy, and true to yourself.
There are a few unconventional and easy ways to cultivate wellness within our minds and body:
Practice Self Compassion: It is totally fine to make mistakes and learn from them, without getting caught in self-criticism and doubts. Remind yourself to be kind and try again.
Entertain Your Emotions (Including Anger, Sorrow and Overwhelm): Identify your emotions and allow yourself to feel them. Understanding what you are feeling is the first step to get through them.
Prioritize: Know who and what is more important, and should be done first. Scheduling tasks and prioritizing beforehand saves a lot of head space and brings more mindfulness to our daily tasks.
Create Boundaries: Decide where and when you need to say ‘no’, and stick to it consistently. Likewise, respect and be mindful of the boundaries of others.
Meditate and Exercise: Include any relaxation exercise in your lifestyle and unwind yourself from everyday strain.
Self-care is said to be the key to live a healthy, well-balanced life. It is essential to fill our vessels by continuously practicing self-care which refuel us and help in extending fulfilling relationships with our surrounding as well.
